What you need: no lab tests — either a timed 1-mile walk (Rockport) or a 12-minute run distance (Cooper), plus heart rate for the walk test.

VO2max Estimator

How to use this calculator

Pick one test. For the Rockport walk: walk 1 mile as fast as you can (without running), then note your time and your heart rate right at the finish. For the Cooper test: run as far as you can in exactly 12 minutes and note the distance.

What your result means

VO2max (maximal oxygen uptake) is one of the strongest single predictors of all-cause mortality in the research literature — outperforming smoking status or diabetes in some studies. This is a field-test estimate, not a lab-measured value from gas-exchange testing, so treat it as directional rather than exact.

What people say

"Didn't know VO2max was such a strong longevity predictor until I read the citation here — did the Rockport test that afternoon."

— Derek W.

"Liked having both test options — Cooper worked better for me since I already run."

— Amara O.
