What you need: a grip-strength reading (hand dynamometer). Gait speed and calf circumference are optional extras.

Sarcopenia Risk Screen

How to use this calculator

A hand dynamometer gives grip strength (many pharmacies and gyms have one); gait speed can be measured by timing a normal-pace 4-metre walk; calf circumference is measured at its widest point with a tape measure. Grip strength alone is enough to run the screen — the other two sharpen it.

What your result means

This applies the EWGSOP2 (European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People) cutoffs used in clinical screening for age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia). It flags whether your numbers fall below the reference thresholds for your sex — it is a screening indicator to bring up with a doctor, not a diagnosis.

What people say

"Never heard of EWGSOP2 before — good to know my grip strength is actually a real clinical marker."

— Robert H.

"Used it before and after 3 months of strength training — numbers moved in the right direction."

— Linda C.
